FEED THE COMMUNITY

The Feed The Community Program provides food support to individuals and families at risk of hunger in the South Bronx and New York City as a whole. The goal of this program is to address food insecurity and inequity that has persisted in the South Bronx for several decades. Majority of those me serve are from the South Bronx Community and its surrounding neighborhoods. We also serve others that are referred from the New York City’s Hunger Hotline. Our feeding program is available to anyone that is hungry or at risk of hunger irrespective of immigration status.

FRESH CONNECT
FOOD BOX

WOL runs a farm-share program called Fresh Food Box Program which provides clients the opportunity to jointly purchase weekly or bi-weekly fresh produce at a reduced price. The goal of the program is to provide access to fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables to the community residents. With FreshConnect Food Box Program in partnership with GrowNYC, clients and community residents have the opportunity to order fresh and organic vegetables and fruits directly from the farm using the farm farm share model. Participants can order using their SNAP as well.

 

COUNSELING

WOL has Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) that provides much needed counseling to our clients and community residents. A central focus of this program is to work creatively with clients to ensure that they are able to receive counseling and access public benefits – including – housing and legal assistance, employment/vocational training, mental health services and other critical resources as needed.

CASE MANAGEMENT

WOL provides its clients supportive social services which include among others: Housing Eviction Prevention, Housing referrals, Medicaid Application, Health Insurance enrollment, SNAP Application, Immigration Services/Referral, Homeless Outreach, etc.

SENIOR WELLNESS

The Senior Program is a weekly program that caters specially to adults 55 and older. This program provides free health, fitness and nutrition classes, free health screening, free meals and pantry and opportunities for civic service.

NUTRITION TRAINING

Individuals and families-children, parents and grandparents learn together to prepare meals, try-out new recipes provided at the Pantry, learn about foods that will positively impact their health, and discover ways to stretch their dollars so that they don’t go hungry. The overall goal of this program is to reduce the high rate of obesity, diabetes and other health related programs that is affecting a large portion of our community and create solutions for a healthier South Bronx.

JOB SCREENING AND REFERRAL

In conjunction with Workforce 1, Bronx Office we provide job screenings and referrals. We offer practical, informative solutions for unemployed individuals and provide contacts, education and shill building that will further each client’s job readiness and prospects. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that our clients have access to jobs and can generate income to enable them be self-sufficient and independent.

COMMUNITY FITNESS

Every week clients and community residents participate in free fitness classes offered at Word Of Life International, Inc. Certified Fitness Instructors work with volunteers to provide low and high impact exercise routines twice a week. WOL is also working in collaboration with Lyft-Citi Bike to promote its Bike Share program in the Bronx.

BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING

In partnership with NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, WOL provides weekly blood pressure screening to our clients in an effort to reduce the devastating effect that high blood pressure has on our community. After screening by volunteers, clients that immediate medical attention are referred to their primary care providers or appropriate health facility for follow-up/treatment.

HIV/AIDS OUTREACH

WOL runs an HIV/AIDS outreach program that provides training, testing, referrals, and supportive services to people living with HIV/AIDS.HIV/AIDS continues to cause significant damage in the South Bronx Community. The spread of this deadly virus has unfortunately been overlooked. In partnership with National Black Leadership Commission on Health, Inc., WOL provides free HIV/AIDS Outreach, workshops, seminars and onsite testing and referrals clients and community residents.

YOUTH ENRICHMENT

WOL works in partnership with Universities, Colleges, Middle/High Schools and several youth development organizations to provide youth with the opportunities for empowerment, community service, leadership development and academic support.

Covid-19 Vaccine Outreach

WOL provides ongoing Covid-19 related services including food support, PPE distribution, health safety trainings, and conducts vaccine outreach to increase rates of COVID-19 vaccine participation in the South Bronx.

Volunteer Program

Volunteers form a core component of our program. Every week we have several volunteers that participate in various aspects of our program services which include among others: Food Pantry, Senior Wellness Program, Mental Health Outreach, Fitness Classes, Social Services, etc. Our volunteer program allows participants to give back to the community, provide re-entry opportunity for individuals associated with the criminal justice system and an excellent platform for youth leadership development.
